EMWRAP: Electric-Magnetic-Waves Resident Archive for Polar

The project builds a resident archive (RA) for the electric field, magnetic field, and plasma wave data collected by the Polar satellite to maintain the data availability to the scientific community after the spacecraft ended its operation in April 2008. With more than eleven years of observations, Polar has sampled all the regions of the magnetosphere inside a distance of 9 Re, and its dataset will continue to be valuable for magnetospheric research through the use of these data either alone or with other joint observations.

The tasks of building this RA can be divided into three parts:

  • Establish a central RA web server with two mirror sites at other institutes, each equipped with the entire data archive to safeguard against data loss;
  • Generate documentation for the data sets following widely accepted standards, and archive the expertise in the data sets to provide future users with necessary knowledge to analyze the data;
  • Fully integrate with NASA’s Virtual Magnetospheric Observatory (VMO) by providing all the needed metadata to maximize user access in the Heliophysics Data Environment (HPDE).

The data products and documentation are also delivered to NSSDC for permanent archives throughout the duration of the project. The design of this RA is flexible so that it can react to possible additions or changes as the HPDE evolves. This project directly responds to one of the main objectives of NASA's Heliophysics Virtual Observatory Program in that it provides continuing access to scientifically significant data products after the end of the mission.
